The Scholarship Fund

Richard (Dick) Williams was an unsung, local hero. He worked tirelessly for others, and always put other people before himself.

After his passing, a few of his close mates got together to create this Scholarship Fund in his memory.

Dick spent his formative years at Mordialloc College and was a devoted member of the Mordialloc Cricket Club, so it was decided that it would be only fitting to direct the Fund’s assistance to young people who attend these organisations.

It will grant two separate Awards each year:

  1. Student’s Award: Will be granted to a talented Mordialloc Secondary College student, who could use some extra financial help to further their studies and interests. Applications will be sought each year in December, with the Award to be paid the following March.

  2. Cricketer’s Award: Will be granted to a talented young cricketer from Mordialloc Cricket Club who could use some extra financial help to further their ambitions in their cricket endeavours. The Cricket Club will select the recipient in consultation with the Fund’s Board.

This Scholarship Fund is an important part of Dick’s legacy, keeping his generosity of spirit alive.

The Board

The Scholarship Fund is a company limited by guarantee, and consists of a Board and a constitution that governs it.

The current Board consists of Steven Strange, Lindy Langshaw (Dick’s partner), David Downie, Ivor Donohue, Michael Tabak, Rhonda Newton, and Libby Niven.

The Board provides governance and strategic leadership to the Fund, and needs people on it who have a wide range of skills and backgrounds in order to move the vision forward.

Board member responsibilities include attending monthly meetings (usually held on a Friday evening in Heatherton), mapping out fund-raising strategies and implementation, and monitoring the Fund’s financial performance.

As the Fund is supported by an entity that is public, its accounts are independently audited and published.

During the year, the Board will continue to raise funds in order to ensure that the Scholarship remains perpetual.
